Return To
Mythic Village

Homecoming

One of the most mythically rich, but often brutal experiences of life is that of homecoming. Often there are the senses of return and reunion--often longed for by all. But, during absences, life goes on and everyone adjusts to the reality of being parted. Things do not always work out well upon returns from extended journeys. Joy and ritual merge together in the act of homecoming, but often that joy is mitigated by the reality that sets in after the bands have ceased playing. Everything is different, and new accomodations must be worked out--and often conflicting needs cannot be met.

The mythic perspective does not follow everyone living happily ever after--that alternative is a fairy tale, not a myth. Underlying the outward manifestations of joy and relief, sometimes there is no one to greet us at the dock or railway station. Perhaps there is someone there, but not the hoped for someone--or the special someone is there but under conflicted circumstances.

That is why a safe harbor, like the Mythic Harbor offers a retreat and recovery zone. Sometimes it takes time to transition back into the the mythic world of home. After the crowds have dispersed and the band has gone, what will it be like? Perhaps it depends on the myth we are living at the time.
